Nga mihi atu ki a Rangatira ko Judge Dalmer. Fond memories of our time together on the NZ Parole Board. You always inspired me to always remember the under privileged – which always resonated with me as a Māori woman. Thank you for our wonderful discussions. I always held you in high regard. We were deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of Judge John Dalmer. We send our heartfelt condolences to the Dalmer family. Judge Dalmer was a great supporter of Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington and a member of the Victoria Benefactors’ Circle, having made generous gifts towards scholarships and to support the work of Te Tātai Hauora o Hine – National Centre for Women’s Health Research Aotearoa. We are truly grateful for his caring support, which has made a significant contribution towards improving the health of New Zealand women. He will be missed.

Ka nui te aroha ki te whanau a Dalmer. Moe mai atu ra e Pa.

Tena koe James. Sending hugs & aroha from mine to yours. Mum & I were talking about you & your Dad a couple of weeks ago. Many moons have passed since we last spoke as kids & I only say kids as my grand children are almost the age we were back in 87-88.
I’m grateful for the time I had working with Judge Dalmer, I can still hear his voice clear in my head. One time an old man was sitting at the back of court, so your father said how can I help you sir. He replied I’m waiting to be called up. What’s your name? Geert Bowhius …. Where is the file Mr Simpson. I said we called him earlier in the day. I had miss-pronounced his name. I turned around & said I’ll go get his sheet now before the arrest warrant for failing to appear is typed up. Judge said to the old fella. Sorry about that if you had had a maori name he would have got it right lol he was a fair man with quick wit. So saddened to hear of his passing. He will always sit high amongst people I’ve had the privilege of knowing.

My condolences again. Ngā mihi Pina

Hi dear John’s family! I first met john’s parents as a child as Mr and Mrs Dalmer were friends of my parents at Darfield and would call in for a cup of tea… I knew John during his rugby days and later when he was such a friend to my friend Margaret Lee. .I particularly remember sharing birthday dinner with you all at John’s home in Kelburn. We have so many sweet memories…

I am so sad for your loss
with love and deep sympathy

John was a wonderful Judge, who brought a natural sense of doing what was right and fair to the Bench. He had a wonderful sense of humour, that was often self deprecating. He was in short a pleasure to appear before. After he finished sitting on the Bench, he joined the Parole Board, where I had the pleasure of interacting with him again. Rest well my friend.
