Tributes to Jean

Dr Judith Whitcombe

I have known Jean for many years and have enjoyed our association in a variety of contexts. Initially we met through the National Council of Women Wellington Branch. Later when Jean was chairing the NCWNZ Parliamentary Watch Committee, I joined as her Secretary. We arranged submissions on draft legislation impacting on women and presented the submissions from NCWNZ to the relevant Select Committee at Parliament. When Jean’s eye problems intruded she resigned from PWC. I continued on. Over the years Jean and I and another former PWC member have kept in touch through hosting lunches in our homes. Jean and I have also communicated through phone and email messages and compared progress in our gardens. My last message from Jean was on 26 January and contained a lovely photo of her white orchid which had a second flowering. Jean also said that she was “delirious with joy” after her successful operation at Kenepuru Hospital. I had replied to Jean on 3 February 2024. Thank you Mark for your phone call to advise me of Jean’s passing. She was a special person in this day and age and is now at peace. I will be with her online at her Funeral.

Fiona Gardenier

Dear Peter and Mark
Me and my siblings were very sad to hear about the recent and sudden death of your Mum. She was a very good friend of our mother, Rini Gardenier, and I would often hear my Mum talk about your Mum and the calls/visits/catch ups that they had over the years. I understand they had been good friends having meet through St Ninians and St Anslems.
My Mum died after a short illness last September and when she first went into hospital she asked that I contact her four closest friends to let them know of her situation. So in September last year I had a few chats with your mother.
Feeling for you both and your families as you navigate this time. Sure is tough and a difference not having either parent to see/visit/talk to.
Take care
Fiona, Marianne, Gerrit and Peter

Alison & Philip Dyer

We were very saddened to hear of Jean’s sudden passing. We were neighbours for many years and were very fond of Jean (and Geoff). She was always such an elegant, intelligent and friendly lady. We will miss seeing her tending to her garden. Our deepest condolences to all her extended family.
