We were so sorry to hear of the passing of David. He was a lovely friend to many and will be sadly missed.
He also created such a great cafe, a real bonus to Wellington. We send our love and thoughts to his family and
friends, and we regret not being able to be with you all. With love and sadness, Dayle and Mike Hurrell.

I first met Dave in the mid-70s when we were both young posties running around the hills of Wellington. He always sported the most fetching shorts – and probably the best legs – in the NZ Post building. Over the ensuing decades we have remained friends, even though we lived in different cities and only saw each other occasionally. I have always admired his sharp wit, his warm hospitality, his intellect and his kindness. It’s been a real privilege to know David, a true gentleman. Love, Linda Herrick

Sending love and thoughts to Mary, family and friends. I feel grateful to have known David initially as my boss at the Lido and over the decades a very close friend and confidant whom I shared many birthday celebrations, Christmas Days, holidays, stories, meals, crosswords, champagne, worries, laughs and occasional upset. I admired his style, class, wit, intelligence, generosity, warmth, risk taking and sense of adventure. Anyone at his 70th would have heard me sharing how much he meant to me. Thankfully I got to tell him I love him just before he died. I’ve missed him for some time and will do for more to come. Warm hugs to everyone. I’ll be watching his send off from afar. Love always, Vivienne.

There are friends, there is family. There are friends that become family. David was part of my New Zealand family. I will miss him.
May you be at peace as you now spread your wings and journey home dear David.
With much love

So glad I could help with Dave’s achievement of his Law Degree – as I was one of his painters when he was financing his studies with one of his many business ventures. Classy guy all round – we had a great adventure in Greece for Nick Hydes’ 60th birthday. The last time I saw Dave was when I stayed with him in Karaka Bay after delivering some furniture to him from Auckland in 2022 – he told me then that ‘once you reach 70 , you know your fucked’ , typical Dave I thought at the time xx
