Patricia Pearl's life.
Tie, Patricia Pearl (nee Elgar)
W5509 RNZWAAF
Patricia took her final flight on 30th July 2024, from Sprott House in Karori, aged 99. Until shortly before her death, she lived in her cottage in Karori where much of her life was spent.
Devoted wife of Squadron Leader Alexander Stuart Tie (dec 1956). Daughter of Alfred Edward and Pearl Elizabeth Elgar. Sister of Edward, Gerald, Bettine, Stanley, Marjorie, Ronald and Ruhi. Greatly loved mother of Robert, Andrew, Wendy, Bruce and Maxwell. Grandmother of Karin Staines, Alexander, Louise and James Tie, Fraser and Jessica Allison, Dylan and Kim Tie, and Sophie and Catherine Tie. Great grandmother of Gabrielle, Anna, Beatrice, Imogen, Rose, Arthur, Layla, Ardie, Aaliyah, Rueben, Charlie and Ardie. Pat had many nephews and nieces, and descendants from them.
She was devoted to the memory of Stuart, and remained single after his death in the Malayan Emergency in 1956 while supply dropping during the monsoon. (The crash was the last fatal accident on active service in the RNZAF.) The RSA was a wonderful comfort to her, and their wartime friends supported her greatly all through life.

A family cremation was held on 1st August. There will be a funeral service at St Mary’s Church, Karori, at 1100hrs on Monday 5th August.

Haere atu rā e te hoa pūmau, ā, e tangi ana te ngākau.
So very sad to read of Pat’s death in The Press just now. I last saw Pat in mid-March, in her house at Campbell Street, and we had a great wee time together, solving the world’s problems and ruminating on NZ’s current politics. Her body was failing her, but that mind of hers was as sharp as ever. I visited Pat whenever I visited Wellington, and on my last visit wished I was living there now so I could see her more often. I first met her at Teachers’ College, and enjoyed her company so much, especially at Akopai Māori Club. She always spoke with love for her children, and her husband. We spoke about family a lot in March, and about her house. I cannot be there at the funeral service on Monday, but will link into the live-stream. Sending love to all her whānau at this time of loss and grief. Me te aroha, Mary.

I have just finished watching the live streaming of Pat Tie’s service in Karori, Wellington.
The service was cutting in and out (especially near the start) and then it froze totally when a guy was giving his speech only to come back in at the end of it. I’m not sure whether it’s your equipment or something else??

Kia ora to Pat’s family. I am very saddened to hear of Pat’s death. I have many fond memories of time spent with her – at the Akopai Maori Club, during my time at Wellington Teacher’s College, time she spent with my 2 boys when they were small, time spent together during summer holidays at Api’s family home Kaitaha on the East Coast. She was a valued and treasured friend and she will not be forgotten. Thinking of you all with much aroha.
Rest in peace Pat.
Arohanui, Karin.

I worked with Pat at Teachers College in the 70’s. She always had a smile and a bright and positive attitude.
What a grand age. RIP dear Pat.

I am in London, UK so unable to attend lovely Pat’s service. Hopefully you will all see my sister Jenny who will be there to represent the McLean family. If the WiFi in the hospital where I’m currently incarcerated works, I will endeavour to watch the livestream. I have such fond memories of your lovely mum, what a wonderful long life she lived and loved. You are all in my thoughts at this time.
R.I.P. Patricia Pearl ❤️

Lovely service for a great lady. Pat and her siblings were first cousins to my father (Walter) and his sisters Pat, Joan and Enid. Reg and Jean are my grandparents. We also visited Stan, Ted, Ruhi and Pat with our parents. The cousins were always close across their whole lives. Best regards David.
