I was sad to here that Isobel had died and hadn’t realised she was ill.
When we sat next to each other at NZSO concerts I could always rely on her good company. She had a lovely sense of humour.
Regrettably I am unable to attend her funeral tomorrow but will be thinking of you all.
Kind regards,
Jane.

Remembering Isobel Evans
Our deepest condolences go to Garry, Megan and Sarah, to Gus, and to Jack, Louie, Anabelle and Sam, and to all of Isobel’s family and friends.
For our family, Isobel is much more than a neighbour. She has been part of the fabric of our lives for 36 years, since 1986.
We know Isobel as inquisitive, optimistic, cheerful and, above all, steely. She has remarkable strength, particularly in the face of chronic illness. Yet even when facing her own difficulties, she never loses sight of what matters to other people.
One of the things we remember most is the way Isobel listens. She has a way of locking eyes with you, making you feel seen, noticed, respected and included. Then comes the barrage of informed kōrero, often accompanied by that unmistakable cheeky glint in her eye.
It is always a pleasant surprise to bump into Isobel incidentally around Wellington. And there she is, with a Labrador in tow, making her way up and down Wellington’s hills through the wind, the wet and the wild. Somehow, that feels very Isobel.
Her care extends far beyond our immediate neighbourhood. We see the depth and breadth of her concern for people across the community and across the city.
Isobel is also a wonderful support to her husband, Garry, in his community, professional and civic roles. We see that same spirit in the family she and Garry have raised. Megan and Sarah are inquisitive, caring and deeply involved in their community, including through education and governance.
What stays with us most is Isobel’s capacity to listen and understand — to make another person feel that they matter.
Thank you, Isobel, for being our neighbour for 36 years, for being a familiar face around Wellington, and for making the people around you feel seen.
You are deeply loved, and deeply missed.
For me, that is part of what a life well lived means: truthfulness with justice and love, bearing the fruit of peace.
