Adriaan, (Arie), and Janice Geerlofs

Dear Janice and Roseingrave family,
We wish to sincerely pass on our condolences to you with passing away of your beloved husband Matt.
Arie remembered the IRD team bonding courses and NZ Society of Accountants Conferences that Matt and he attended. Imagine Matt leaping out of a tree at a height of 30 feet and having to catch a trapeze. Next day we were underground caving very close to a rumbling Mount Ruapehu.
Matt faced these challenges, like he did all his challenges in his life, with good humour and a big grin on his face.

Thinking of you

I’ll forever cherish the times we shared as kids. With Matt living only 200 metres away on the other side of the Beetham Street paddock reserve, the three of us — Bill, Matt, and me — were constantly together. We played, explored, and went to the same school, all of us the same age and growing up in step with one another.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time, although I only briefly worked alongside Matthew, he was an amazing person, and I will always treasure those memories. Rest in peace.

Rest in peace Matt – we always found you to be a kind and gentle man and we appreciated your help and encouragement especially in Brussels.
You were well liked and well respected by all the people over there.

Deepest condolences to you all. Matt did a great job at IRD especially in setting up and then running Speci Audit. He was much respected internally and externally.
Thank you for your service to NZ Matt.
David Henry former Commissioner of Inland Revenue

Graeme Ludlow

I would like to extend my sympathy to Janice and all of Matt’s family.

I was Comptroller of Customs when Matt joined Customs from Inland Revenue, at what now seems like a very long time ago. When he came to Customs we needed serious improvements in our ability to investigate offences and prepare cases for prosecution, particularly in the area of commercial fraud. Matt applied for the position that would lead those improvements and when I interviewed him I learned about the similar kinds of work he had done for the IRD, most notably in investigating organised crime. Senior managers in the IRD confirmed the quality of the work that Matt had done for them, and so I was happy to welcome him into Customs and I got to know him well during my remaining time as Comptroller.

As people who knew Matt would expect, he did an outstanding job. And, at times, in quite difficult circumstances. His quiet, measured, thoughtful and very articulate approach was just what we needed, in the leadership of investigations work and also more widely as a member of the senior management team. I know that after I left Customs Matt went on to make similarly important contributions in other Customs work, including postings to positions in Asia which have their own unique challenges.

I would like his family to know that Matt made a very significant contribution to Customs work for many years. I enjoyed working with him, and learned a lot from doing so. The organization as a whole has much to thank him for.
Again, my sincere condolences to all of Matt’s family.
