Passed away peacefully at home, aged 94, on 12 August, surrounded by loved ones.

Dearly loved wife of the late Roy Savage. Loved mother of Christopher Roy, John, Catherine and Elizabeth. Much-loved Nana of Jasmine and Warren, Matthew and Victoria, Emily, Lizzie, Cameron, Anil and Dilan; and Great-Nana of Jordan. Loved mother-in-law of Glenn, Silvia and Vicki; sister of Robert and the late Ingrid; and much-loved aunty of Peter and Lorna, Joanna and Philip, and Rebecca.

Renate was born in Hong Kong and crossed the ocean by ship at age sixteen for a more stable future in New Zealand. She immediately fell in love with the country and made lifelong friendships here.

Renate was a very kind and caring person who touched the lives of many. She and Roy were a great team, and together they had a profound impact on many people through their warmth, compassion and generosity. She will be happy to be reunited with Roy in heaven.

A very heartfelt thank you to all of Renate’s carers, who cared for her with such kindness and compassion over the past eight years.

At Renate’s request, a private family service has been held.

Dearest Catherine, Glenn, Matthew, Emily, & Lizzie and to all members of the Savage family,
Peter and I were very sorry indeed to hear that Renate passed away recently.
Renate was very kind, caring and a special person. She was stylish, always beautifully groomed and had impeccable manners.
Peter and I can recall the many happy times that Anabel spent school holidays at Tūrangi with Catherine and her siblings and Roy and Renate.

So sorry to read of Renate’s passing. I know the last few years have been difficult for her.
I have wonderful memories of Sunday afternoons in Waikanae and lunching with Renate and Roy (and dear old Bill Pyne) after the cherished cars had been driven. Renate was a delightful lady. She and Roy were a great couple.

I want to acknowledge Renate for the wonderful woman she was. It was a privilege to know her, and call her a friend. Her generosity and kindness were exceptional. Renate and Roy were a wonderful partnership, and many were recipients of their kindness. The Life Education Trust Hutt Valley was one of those recipients and was watched over by Roy and Renate for many years. Rest in peace Renate, I will always remember you.

I was so sad to hear that Renate had died and have been thinking of you all so much. It’s so lovely to know that she passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family. I can picture her there upstairs in her room at Braithwaite Street. As you know, I absolutely adored Renate and Roy and have so many fantastic memories of time spent with them at their Marsden Ave home in the early 80’s as well as up at Taupo. Renate was always so gentle in her demeanour, very kind, warm, lots of fun with the most gorgeous laugh. I can clearly picture her walking up that long driveway with Battle and Capers or driving out into Marsden Ave in one of Roy’s vintage sports cars. She always looked so trim, fit, glowing and naturally beautiful – her radiant, open face smiling and eyes sparkling. I remember thinking how poised she was, full of wisdom and that she had this almost ethereal, spiritual quality about her, a special lightness. Apart from the fact that she never seemed to age, so, in my mind, I felt like she would live forever! ( Which she has, in our hearts and memories!) I know how much she and Roy adored each other and they truly made the most romantic, divine and devoted couple. Plus, what a magnificent family they raised with Catherine, Roy, John and Lizzie ( and all the extended Savage family). Renate will be greatly missed and I’m so grateful that I was able to spend so many happy times with her. I love you all and you’re in my thoughts every day.
