Poem for Chris…

You’d remember those years of wonderful chats
Over the fence, in our homes, sometimes with the cat!
Pop on over, you’d say, it must be time for tea!
Or something a bit stronger – perhaps a single malt whiskey?
We sure had a bond, right from the beginning
Your welcoming face – always smiling and grinning!
As good friends and neighbours, we all played our part
Watched the sport, shared Christmas Cheer, the odd heart-to-heart
Mowing your lawns and a few garden jobs
Finished with chats about more bits-and-bobs
You were always so interested and interesting
You could literally talk about anything and everything
It was fascinating to hear the stories of your life
Your Scottish background, the journey to NZ, your lovely wife
And when your dear Margaret passed away
Life changed so much for you from that day
But as in life, so together you were,
Now in death perhaps you again are with her…
Our chats became phone calls when we moved away
We spoke about all sorts, your family, Island Bay
Your stay with us was such a delight
How game you were to, alone, take that flight
Our Wellington visits would feature again
Those chats in your lounge, though sadly only now and then…
But we will always remember you, Chris
Cherished memories we hold, I say this
For the good people whose paths in life we cross
Just give our days a little more gloss
So now rest in peace, your beautiful soul
What else is there? What other goal…?

Always remembering Chris Agnew – our neighbour and friend

George Skimming

Journey well bonnie lad, I am truly sorry not being able to say goodbye, but I am afraid old age has caught up with me and I can’t join your family and friends to say “go well bonnie lad” it has been a joy to work with and know you and your family. We had some good laughs in our WCC days and the characters we work with, even now as I write I chuckle at some of them. Thanks for all the good memories and as a fellow doonhamer here’s tae us wa’s like us
“damn few”.
Jane, don’t be sad, for your Dad was one of the goodies straight talking, honest, loyal and loved you and your Mum to bits. His son in law and grandchildren made him shine he was so proud of his family.
Be blessed, stay well and be happy.
Kind regards George Skimming
