Jolyon was a dedicated member of the Wellington Gilbert and Sullivan Society and I have good memories of his participation in numerous productions, both in the chorus and in principal roles. His contribution as a fine singer coupled with his acting ability was much valued. He was also on the Society’s executive committee for several years. His long service in St. Mary’s choir was another of his singing activities where his loyalty was greatly appreciated. My sincere condolences to his family at this time of their loss.

Jolyon certainly lived up to the Joly, i.e., Jolly , part of his name, as he had the Best Ever GSOH! He used to crack me up with his witty asides and quirky sense of humour! Sometimes Jolyon used to rumble around on his ” grunt ” of a motorbike, but in crimson leathers, not black. No gang patches on Jolyon – only his signature, wide, welcoming, friendly smile. He would meet me in St Mary`s with his service runsheet knowing I was doing a Reading with my soft voice. Before the 9am service, he`d advise me to, ” Speak Up “. Then, when it was my turn to read the Epistle or Gospel during the service, he`d catch my eye and mouth, ” Speak Up. ” It was a a standing joke between us. However, Jolyon was a reliable, kind, helpful backup to check in with for the correct pronunciation any hard, polysyllabic word( s ). I`ll miss him, his twinkling eyes and his widest-ever, cheeky grin. In fond memory and with sincere respect of Jolyon, I`ll continue to Speak Up!!!
Haere, haere, haere atu rā e hoa, nā/Goodbye for ever, my friend.
